Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed will present Dr. Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Winner and “Father of the Microcredit,” with a Phoenix Award on Friday at 11a.m. The Phoenix Award is the highest honor that the Mayor of Atlanta can bestow upon an individual for their outstanding contributions.
Leaders of Atlanta’s civic and business community will attend the meeting including, representatives from The King Center, The Arthur Blank Family Foundation, CARE, the Carter Center, the University System of Georgia, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and Emory University.
Dr. Yunus, a Bangladeshi banker and economist, is one of seven people in the world to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom and the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal. He is also the recipient of hundreds of national and international awards. Dr. Yunus envisions the total eradication of poverty from the world through better and more equitable lending practices.
