Mayor Kasim Reed will join Dr. Meria Carstarphen, Brown Middle School Principal Tiauna Crooms, APS Social Studies Coordinator Janean Lewis and Department of City Planning Commissioner Tim Keane to announce a new partnership between the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta Public Schools.
Beginning in the spring, APS middle schools will supplement its social studies curriculum to include a component on the Atlanta City Design. The City of Atlanta launched the City Design project in January 2016, and announced the completion of the City Design in September 2017. The City Design envisions what Atlanta could look like in the future, will help guide upcoming designs on development and investments, and influences policy to ensure intentional design for the city. The City Design focuses on five core values: equity, progress, ambition, access and nature.

This unique collaboration between APS and the City of Atlanta will result in 2,700 eighth graders learning about the City Design in this academic year; starting in the 2018-2019 academic year, ninth grade students will also be taught about the City Design.
