AFRD's Swiftwater Rescue Team Assists in South Carolina Recovery Effort

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department’s Swiftwater Rescue Team assisted South Carolina and North Georgia public safety agencies in locating the body of an Atlanta man who drowned on a Chattooga River rafting trip on June 19. Specifically trained in rescue and recovery procedures, nine members of the Special Operations unit traveled to Long Creek, S.C., this week to assist in recovery efforts, joining units from Greenville and Oconee counties, S.C., and Rabun County, Ga.

Thế giới cáUsing sonar, AFRD crews helped narrow the search area and locate the body of Thomas Hill. Rising waters and the location of Mr. Hill's body delayed recovery efforts, which will resume today as conditions permit.

“Our Swiftwater team really puts its professionalism and capabilities to work in these situations,” said Assistant Chief Steven Woodworth who directs the Department’s Special Operations unit. "It makes the constant training worth the effort when we are able to assist in incidents like this."
