Thế giới cáCity of Atlanta Statement on Peoplestown Sewer Capacity Relief Project Homeowner Negotiations

ATLANTA – For decades, residents in the Peoplestown community have endured severe flooding. In July 2012, residents experienced several days of rainfall which flooded several homes along Atlanta, Connally and Ormond Avenues. Our Department of Watershed Management responded immediately to perform on-site inspections and review the stormwater and wastewater infrastructure. After significant research and modeling possible solutions, the City developed the Southeast Atlanta Green Infrastructure Initiative, a $65 million holistic approach for sewer capacity relief in the Peoplestown area. Once completed, the project will include a sustainable garden, gazebos for community gatherings, several detention ponds, and bio retention areas to treat stormwater.

On December 1, Mayor Kasim Reed met with Tanya Washington and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Darden to discuss their concerns and attempt to reach a mutually agreeable solution. Following that meeting, new appraisals were conducted on each home and the homeowners have been offered the fair market value of their home, plus an additional 20 percent over the appraised value and moving expenses.

Thế giới cá This significant investment in southeast Atlanta will be the capstone project in a series of Watershed projects that include: 

• Bioswales along Crumley Street and in Rosa Burney Park.
• Rain gardens near Dunbar Elementary School and on Ira and Sydney Streets.
• Five-million gallon storage vault underneath the media parking lot at Turner Field.

The City has requested a response from the homeowners by December 31, 2015. We look forward to resolving all issues amicably.
