Atlanta Citizens Urged to “Share Your Vision” at 2011 Comprehensive Development Plan Meetings

Department of Planning and Community Development hosts second round of meetings spanning the month of March in various communities

ATLANTA – Would you like to see more retail districts, parks or pedestrian-friendly options in your community? Would you like to give your input on how much industrial land is set aside where you live or work? The City of Atlanta is inviting non-profits, civic and community groups, neighborhood associations, citizens and businesses to attend the March 2011 community meetings for the City of Atlanta Community Development Plan (CDP).

Nearly 200 attendees participated in the first round of 2011 CDP community meetings and had an opportunity to give input on the future plans for their Atlanta neighborhoods. The Department of Planning and Community Development’s Office of Planning is hosting the second round of CDP community meetings throughout March. All meetings are from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M., with the exception of the March 10th meeting, which is from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. The meeting schedule is as follows:

The primary purpose of the City of Atlanta’s CDP is to set the direction for major planning initiatives regarding topics including, but not limited to, land use, housing, economic development, community facilities, historic and natural resources.

With the goal of improving the quality of life for all citizens and businesses, round two CDP community sessions are expected to help identify a new component of the 2011 CDP called “character areas” for all parts of the city. CDP community planning meetings also address current challenges and identify future opportunities. Input and comments from the public and private sectors are required to help formulate the City of Atlanta’s new CDP.

The City of Atlanta’s 2011 CDP will have more emphasis on transit oriented development, sustainability, communities, and brownfields than previous plans. The new CDP will outline opportunities for developable land, improved vehicle and pedestrian circulation, economic development, increased public services and additional infrastructure.

Without the CDP, the City of Atlanta would not be eligible for state and regional funding. The City’s new CDP must be adopted by Atlanta City Council members by October 31. The City of Atlanta’s current CDP was adopted in 2008.
